Breathing in Confinement: On Saturday, January 8, 2022, Branch 7 of the Criminal Court 2 in Rajai Shahr set 10 billion Tomans bail for Afshin Baymani to be granted a furlough. Afshin Baymani is one of the longest-serving political prisoners in Rajai Shahr prison. He has been in prison for 22 years while suffering from heart disease.
According to “Breathing in Confinement”, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on Saturday, January 8, 2022, political prisoner Afshin Baymani was informed that a bail of 10 billion Tomans had been set for his leave.
Mr. Baymani has been in prison for 22 years. In recent years, while in prison, a new case has been brought against him by Deputy Prosecutor Amin Vaziri, for which he has been sentenced to pay diyat (ransom). Earlier, the deputy prosecutor had set four full diyats, equal to one billion and two hundred million tomans, for granting him a leave.
The new case has been filed against Afshin Baymani while he has been in prison for nearly two decades, and given the lack of sufficient evidence, even judges in Branches 3 and 7 of the Criminal Court have refused to hear the case. It should be mentioned that Mr. Baymani suffers from heart disease.
Afshin Baymani was first sentenced to death in 2000, on charge of harboring his brother, who was a supporter of the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization. But after six years, his sentence was reduced to life imprisonment. He is currently serving his 22nd year in Rajai Shahr prison. Mr. Baymani is married and has children. He also has an elderly mother who has been unable to visit her son for the past 20 years as it takes travelling a very long distance.
In February 2020, the bank account of Afshin Baymani’s daughter was frozen by the order of Branch 22 of the Revolutionary Court, without any explanation. An informed source confirming the news to HRANA said: “When Mr. Baymani was arrested, his daughter was 9 months old. She is now about 20 years old and a student whose bank account has been frozen without any explanation by Branch 22 of the General and Revolutionary Court in Tehran. In response to her follow ups, they just gave her a tracking number.”
In addition, in June last year, Branch 22 of the General and Revolutionary Court of Tehran issued a confiscation order on a piece of land owned by Mr. Baymani. According to the ruling, Mr. Baymani’s land will be confiscated by the Execution of Imam’s Order. On May 31, when the agents holding a confiscation order went to the place, they faced resistance from Baymani family as well as the local residents.
