An execution sentence was carried out and another was halted at Lakan Prison in Rasht

Breathing in Confinement – On Thursday, October 31, a prisoner who was sentenced to death on a charge of murder, was executed in Rasht prison. Execution of another prisoner on a similar charge, however, was stopped.

According to a report by Breathing in Confinement- the News Organ of Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on Thursday, October 31 in Lakan Prison in Rasht, the death sentence for Mohsen Khojasteh was halted by the prosecutor’s order. Breathing in Confinement had previously reported the risk of execution for him as well as his family’s effort for obtaining the consent from the victim’s family.

In addition, the Iranian Human Rights Organization announced execution of a prisoner named Mehran Ghorbani in  Lakan prison compound in Rasht. Five years ago, Mehran was arrested on charge of murder, and was later sentenced to death. Up to this moment however, his execution has not been announced by the official media.

It is noteworthy that according to Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League ín Iran, over the last one year (from October 2018- October 2019), at least 280 prisoners have been executed, out of them only 75 have been officially announced.
