Breathing in Confinement: At dawn on Sunday, October 20, 2024, the execution of at least one prisoner convicted of drug-related charges was carried out in Birjand Prison.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news agency of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, a prisoner was executed at dawn on Sunday, October 20, 2024, in Birjand Prison. The identity of the prisoner, Bahman Sheikh Hosseini, has been confirmed by Breathing in Confinement.

According to a report from Breathing in Confinement, Bahman Sheikh Hosseini, a resident of Zabol, was arrested two years ago on drug-related charges and sentenced to death. During his time in detention, he attempted suicide due to the pressures he faced in prison. His execution was carried out without notifying his family and without the right to a final meeting.

As of the time of this report, the execution of this prisoner has not been announced by official resources.

According to the annual report of the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 848 citizens were executed in 2023. Of these, 7 were executed in public. 57 percent of the executions were for drug related charges.
