At dawn on Sunday, 11 May 2025, the death sentence of a prisoner convicted of rape was carried out in Shahrud Prison.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, a prisoner was executed early Sunday morning, 11 May, in Shahrud Prison.

The report quotes Mohammad Sadegh Akbari, the head of the Semnan Province Judiciary, who stated that following a complaint filed by a young woman from Shahrud who was the victim of rape, legal proceedings led to a death sentence, which was later upheld by one of the branches of the Supreme Court. The sentence was carried out at dawn on Sunday, 11 May 2025, in Shahrud Prison. The identity of the prisoner has not been disclosed.

 

Annual Report on Executions in Iran

According to the annual report by the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 1,170 individuals were executed in Iran in 2024. Among them, six people were executed in public, and the executed also included 38 women and 9 juvenile offenders.
