Shaker Bouri, Abadan-Based Satirist, Sentenced to 13 Months and 20 Days in Prison and a Fine

Shaker Bouri, a satirist residing in Abadan, has been sentenced to imprisonment and a fine following judicial proceedings in a case brought against him based on a complaint filed by a member of parliament.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, a verdict issued by Branch 101 of Criminal Court Two in Abadan imposed two separate sentences on Shokrollah Bouri, known as Shaker Bouri. The court sentenced him to 13 months and 20 days’ imprisonment on the charge of “disseminating false information through computer systems with the intention of causing harm to others.” He was also fined 45 million rials for “insulting a member of the Islamic Consultative Assembly.”

The case was opened and investigated following the publication of a video online and a complaint filed against Shaker Bouri by Mousa Ghazanfarabadi, a member of the Islamic Consultative Assembly.

On Monday, 7 September, Shaker Bouri published a video on social media announcing the verdict and stating that he had 20 days to appeal it. Responding to the sentence in a satirical tone, he wrote: “God willing, my imprisonment will solve the country’s problems of theft, embezzlement, inflation, poverty, injustice and unemployment.”

The sentence was issued against a backdrop of previous judicial action against Shaker Bouri, who has also previously been arrested because of his activities.

Shaker Bouri is a satirist whose social media activities and publication of satirical posts and videos have previously resulted in judicial cases being brought against him.
