Breathing in Confinement: The death sentence of at least one prisoner, who had previously been arrested on charges of “murder” and sentenced to death by judicial authorities, was carried out in Meshkin Shahr Prison.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, a prisoner was hanged in Meshkin Shahr Prison in the early hours of Sunday, 7 June. Breathing in Confinement has identified the prisoner as Mehdi Azmoon Bigdeli.

According to the report, Mehdi Azmoon Bigdeli, a married man and father of a young daughter from Parsabad, had been arrested four years ago on charges of “murder” and sentenced to death. Despite efforts by members of the Jalil Homounlu and Bigdelu tribes, as well as local elders, to obtain the consent of the victim’s family, those efforts were unsuccessful. Consequently, the sentence was carried out in the early hours of Sunday, 7 June 2026, in Meshgin Shahr Prison.

At the time of publication, no official sources had announced the execution of this prisoner.

Annual report on executions in Iran
According to the annual report of the Statistical Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, between March 2025 and March 2026, at least 2,616 individuals were executed in Iran. Of these, 12 executions were carried out in public. The executed individuals included 67 women and 8 juvenile offenders.
