Execution of Two Prisoners in Damghan Prison

Breathing in Confinement, Saturday, 1 August 2026: The death sentences of at least two prisoners who had previously been arrested on charges related to drug offences and sentenced to death were carried out in Damghan Prison.

According to reporters for Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the two prisoners were hanged at dawn on Saturday, 1 August, in Damghan Prison. Their identities have been confirmed by Breathing in Confinement as Mohammad Ali Narouei and Mohammadbakhsh Shahbakhsh. Breathing in Confinement had previously reported that both prisoners had been transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions.

According to the report, Mohammad Ali Narouei, a 50-year-old father of four from Zabol, and Mohammadbakhsh Shahbakhsh, a married father of five from Zahedan, were arrested approximately four years ago in a joint case involving drug-related offences and were subsequently sentenced to death. Their sentences were carried out at dawn on Saturday, 1 August 2026, in Damghan Prison.

Annual report on executions in Iran
According to the annual report of the Statistical Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, between March 2025 and March 2026, at least 2,616 individuals were executed in Iran. Of these, 12 executions were carried out in public. The executed individuals included 67 women and 8 juvenile offenders.
