Breathing in Confinement: The death sentences of two prisoners who had previously been arrested and sentenced to death on charges of drug trafficking were carried out on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, in Langrood Prison in Qom.

According to “Breathing in Confinement”, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, two prisoners were executed in Langrood Prison in Qom, on charges of carrying drugs. Breathing in Confinement has identified the prisoners as: Abolfazl Beigzadeh, 24, and Ruhollah Sabz, a married father of one, from a Camp Prison allocated to drug suspects.

“Abolfazl was innocent, he had no drugs when arrested. The drugs were someone else’s,” an informed source told the reporter of Breathing in Confinement. “He had been detained for a year and a half and plead not guilty. But, the judge did not accept his plea. Abolfazl had no criminal record. He was only 24 years old and had just gotten engaged,” the source continued.

The informed source added: “Ruhollah Sabz and Abolfazl Beigzadeh were both convicted in the same case. Ruhollah Sabz was executed at 1 am on Wednesday and Abolfazl Beigzadeh at 5 am on the same day. Abolfazl was buried on Wednesday evening. Abolfazl had a very poor family, to the extent that, they could not even afford to hold a funeral.”

The execution of the two prisoners on drug charges took place while according to a decree of the judiciary, the death penalty for drug convicts had been abolished two years ago.

It is noteworthy that Iran has the highest execution rate in the world per capita. And according to the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the authorities of the Islamic Republic executed at least 114 people in the first six months of 2020.
