Breathing in Confinement: After being flogged, Zohreh Sarv, a political prisoner and media activist, was granted a leave from Qarchak prison in Varamin on Monday, April 4. This political prisoner inflicted 74 lashes despite the fact that her sentence had previously been converted to a fine and after presenting the deposit slip, this part of the case was declared closed.
According to “Bidar Zani”, this political activist’s flogging sentence was carried out before her exit from Qarchak prison, threatening to prevent her being granted leave from prison. Ms. Sarv was sentenced by the court of first instance in Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran to three years in prison, four months of active involvement in Basij, as well as reading the Tafsir of Surah Al-Hujurat. This sentence was reduced to 2 years and 8 months imprisonment after she accepted the court’s decision.
Ms. Sarv had been arrested on December 24, 2019 for her activities on social media (Instagram) and was transferred to the Revolutionary Guards Intelligence Detention Center in Tehran (Ward 1a). By finalizing her interrogation on January 11, 2020, she was transferred from the detention center of IRIGC to Qarchak prison in Varamin.
Her trial was held on February 22, 2020, when Ms. Sarv was sentenced by Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari, to three years in prison on charge of “insulting the Supreme Leader, propaganda against the regime, as well as gathering and colluding.” . Besides, she was sentenced to four months of active involvement in Basij as well as reading the Tafsir of Surah Al-Hujurat as a complementary  punishment. The sentence was reduced to two years and eight months in prison after she accepted the sentence.
Her sentence of 74 lashes has been carried out before she was sent on leave, despite the fact that it was related to second part of her case for the charge of “keeping alcoholic beverages at home” which was already been converted into payment of a fine and after she presented the deposit slip, the case had been declared closed.
