Breathing in Confinement: On Friday, May 20, after serving ten years in prison, the political prisoner Mehdi Farahi Shandiz was released from Karaj Central Penitentiary.
According to “Breathing in Confinement”, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the political prisoner Mehdi Farahi Shandiz was released on Friday, May 20, 2022. Mr. Farahi Shandiz had been arrested and transferred to prison in January 2021.
Mr. Farahi had been sentenced on May 26, 2015, by Branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Moghiseh, to three years in prison for insulting the Supreme Leader and disturbing public order while in prison. In February 2015, he was sentenced to three years in prison by Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Salavati, for insulting the Supreme Leader. In May 2011 also, citing to different evidence, but on the same charge, Mr. Farahi was sentenced to three years in prison.
Mehdi Farahi Shandiz, who has several times been detained, was also arrested on May 1, 2009, on the International Labor Day in Laleh Park in Tehran. At the time of his arrest, security agents searched his home and confiscated his documents, personal belongings and his books. Following his arrest, Mr. Shandiz was sentenced to nine months in prison, most of which was spent in solitary confinement in Ward 209 of Evin Prison. He was finally was released in February 2010.
