Saba Kordafshari goes on leave from Qarchak prison in Varamin

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on Monday, February 21, Saba Kordafshari, a civil activist imprisoned in Qarchak prison in Varamin, was sent on leave.
Saba Kordafshari a civil activist, and opponent of the compulsory hijab, was arrested for the first time on June 1, 2019. Three months after her release, she was re-arrested by security forces at her home and 11 days later, after completion of her interrogation was transferred to prison. Finally, on August 27, 2019, in Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran, headed by Judge Iman Afshari, she was sentenced to a total of 24 years in prison along with other social deprivations on charges of “spreading immorality and depravity through removing hijab and walking unveiled,” “propaganda activities against the regime,” as well as ” conspiracy and colluding to commit a crime against the security of the country.” Due to the multiplicity of her crimes and having a previous record, her sentences increased by 50%, which eventually resulted in a sentence of 15 years in prison, as her most severe sentence. Finally, with the application of the law on reduction of punishments, 7 years and 6 months of imprisonment was enforceable on her.
However, in an obvious violation, the Appeal Court’s verdict was ignored and she was sentenced to 24 years in prison, of which 15 years is enforceable. The charges of “spreading immorality and depravity through removing hijab and walking unveiled,” which had previously been dropped, have been once again added to Ms. Afshari’s indictment.
