Breathing in Confinement: On January 25, the second hearing on the case of Ali Younesi and Amir Hossein Moradi, two detained students of Sharif University, was held in Branch 29 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, after a six-month delay, the second hearing on the case of Ali Younesi and Amir Hossein Moradi, two detained students of Sharif University, was held on, Tuesday, January 25, 2022.

Mustafa Nili, the students’ lawyer, wrote on his personal page on social media that his clients spoke in their defense and about their detention conditions.  He added that he and other lawyers presented their defense arguments and that the next hearing would be held later.”

The first hearing on the charges against Amir Hossein Moradi and Ali Younesi, was held on July 3, 2021, 450 days after their arrest, in Branch 29 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran.  Mustafa Nili said the charges against these students were: “Acting against national security and propaganda activities against the regime.”

Earlier, Mustafa Nili criticizing Fars News Agency affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards, for releasing videos of the two students’ forced confessions, said: “As far as we know, these pieces of evidence were not in the file and even we, the students’ lawyers, have never seen these videos!  “The videos were released only because the security agency intended to divert public opinion and to keep up the pressure on the judiciary.”

Mustafa Nili referring to the students’ coerced confessions, said: “For example, lately we saw videos attributed to our clients broadcast by Fars News Agency and its reporter.  Based on the conversations I had with the clients, they said that they were not in good condition and later in the interrogation process, they denied all their allegations.  Our clients have explicitly stated that they made the statements while were held in solitary confinement.”

Ali Younesi’s lawyer said: “The two defendants, who are only about 21 years old, have been detained in security ward 209 with its harsh conditions for nearly 21 months.  The security agency has requested that Ali Younesi and Amir Hossein Moradi remain in security ward 209 until the verdict is issued. While neither the supervising judge nor the Tehran Prosecutor pay attention to our protests against keeping them in this ward and demanding for their transfer.  Preliminary investigations have long been completed, but these two elite students are still being held in security cells, without this being necessary at all.”

Ali Younesi, a computer engineering student, and Amir Hossein Moradi, a physics student at Sharif University of Technology, were arrested by Ministry of Intelligence agents on April 10, 2020, and transferred to ward 209 of Evin Prison, the Ministry’s detention center.  The students are said to have been arrested by plainclothes agents while being beaten and without being presented an arrest warrant.
