Yasaman Ariani catches Covid-19 in Kachuei prison in Karaj

Breathing in Confinement: Yasaman Ariani, a 23-year-old civil activist has caught Covid-19 in Kachuei Prison in Karaj. On October 21, 2020, for unknown reasons, Yasaman Ariani and her mother Monireh Arabshahi were transferred from Evin Prison to Kachuei Prison in Karaj.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, quoting Mr. Paknia, Ms. Ariani’s lawyer, on October 21, she along with five other prisoners whose Coronavirus tests came positive, have been transferred to a cell, without being provided any medical care. Announcing this news, Mr. Paknia requested a sick leave to be granted to this civil activist.

 

Yasaman Ariani, a civil activist and theater actress, was arrested in April 2019 and was taken to Vozara Detention Center to be later transferred to Qarchak Prison in Varamin. And on August 12, 2019, she along with her mother was transferred from Qarchak to Evin prison.

 

At Branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran, headed by Judge Mohammad Moghiseh, Yasaman Ariani and her mother Monireh Arabshahi, were each sentenced to16 years in prison on charges of “conspiracy to act against national security, propaganda against the regime, and incitement to depravity and debauchery.” In appeal court, however, their sentences were reduced to of 9 years and 7 months in prison.

According to Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, the most severe punishment of 5 years and six months imprisonment, could be applicable to these prisoners.
