Breathing in Confinement: Concurrently with the ongoing nationwide protests, the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran publishes its monthly report on human rights violations in Iran. The protests started on September 16 following the killing of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini by the Morality Police and is still ongoing despite the brutal repression and systematic violation of human rights.

According to “Breathing in Confinement”, the news organ of the Prisoner’ Rights League in Iran, the widespread suppression of protests has continued for the past 36 days in the streets, universities and schools, while the killing machine is active in prisons. The authorities of the Islamic Republic executed at least 27 prisoners in the last month.

The executed death sentences

According to the statistics center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, out of 27 executed prisoners, 20 had been arrested on the charge of “drug-related offences”, 5 on the charge of “murder” and 2 on the charge of “rape”.

However, the state media only announced the execution of 3 prisoners and the remaining 24 revealed by human rights activists.

In the last month, 4 prisoners were hanged in Zahedan, 2 prisoners in Qazvin, 5 prisoners in Mashhad, 3 prisoners in Sari, 6 prisoners in Shiraz, 2 prisoners in Qom, 2 prisoners in Zanjan, 1 prisoner in Neishabour, 1 prisoner in Hamedan and 1 prisoner in Aligudarz prison.

In addition, three prisoners were sentenced to death in Tehran, Taibad and Mahshahr prisons.

A prisoner in Taibad has been sentenced to public execution twice for murder.

Political prisoner Abbas Drees, father of 3, one of the protesters of November 2019 and the only survivor of “canebrake in Mahshahr”, has been sentenced to death by a Court in Mahshahr on October 22.

Nationwide protests

Last month, at least 1,466 protest rallies held by Iranian people including students, lawyers, teachers, workers, and other groups. It is estimated that more than ten thousand people were arrested.

The statistics center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran (Breathing in Confinement) has identified at least 769 arrested protesters. “Breathing in Confinement” previously also published a report about the arrested students at various universities.

In addition to those detainees recorded by the Statistical Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on September 24, the General and Revolutionary Prosecutor of Sari announced the arrest of 450 people in this city.

On October 12, Bushehr governor’s security deputy announced the number of the arrested citizens as 200.

According to the state media, 40 protesters were arrested in just one day in Nazi Abad neighborhood in Tehran.

The Human Rights Commission of the Azerbaijan Bar Association has announced that more than 1,700 protesters have been arrested in Tabriz.

The police commander of Gilan province also announced the arrest of 880 protesting citizens in this province.

On October 19, MP Ahmad Ali Rezabeigi said: “In the recent events, out of 3 thousand people arrested in Tehran and transferred to Fashafouyeh Prison, there were 360 women, 200 university students and 200 school students.

On October 21, the police commander of Sistan and Baluchestan Province announced the arrest of 57 people during the protests in Zahedan.

These figures show only a few out of a huge number of detained protesters.

As per the news, detainees in various cities have been beaten and tortured, and some were killed under torture. The regime, however, falsely claims that the killed prisoners were died by suicide. On October 22, Ramin Fatehi, detained in Sanandaj, died under torture in the city’s prison, and again the authorities of the Islamic Republic attributed his death to suicide.

The lack of transparency about the number and condition of the detainees adds to the concerns about them.

According to the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran, more than 6,000 people have been arrested, but the actual number of arrested protesters is estimated to be more than 10,000.

On October 15, some of the prisoners in Evin Prison were either killed or injured on an attack by the security forces. The armed agents raided on and set fire in Ward 7 as well as Ward 8 where the political prisoners are being held. The state media reported that 8 prisoners were killed and 60 were injured without revealing their identities. However, according to eyewitnesses, the number of prisoners killed was more than 30.

Mohammad Khani, a political prisoner imprisoned in Evin, was shot by the security forces on October 15 and was denied medical care for 3 days. On October 19, he was transferred to Taleghani Hospital, but was returned to prison without completing his treatment course.

On October 16, forty-two political prisoners in Evin, most of them injured by shotguns, were beaten and transferred to Rajaeishahr Prison in Karaj. “Breathing in Confinement” has previously published a report on poor and concerning condition of these prisoners.

During the nationwide protests, school students also staged protest rallies in schools and nearby streets, which violently supressed by the security forces. According to the authorities of the Islamic Republic, at least 200 students have been arrested across the country. Considering the government’s previous record in releasing false statistics, the real number of arrested children is undoubtedly much higher.

According to Amnesty International, in these protests at least 32 children have been killed by security agents.

The inhuman sentence of flogging

On October 9, 2022, Kachuei court in Karaj sentenced the political prisoner Sina Zahiri to 74 lashes for delayed return to prison from leave.

Labor accidents

Fifty-one workers at Urmia factory were injured following the leak of ammonia gas.

In the last month, at least 100 workers were fired. Out of a total of 85 workers in Jahan Shahr Zanjan Vegetable Oil Company 60 were fired due to lack of financial resources.

Brick Production Factory in Sabzevar fired 40 workers due to financial loss.

In addition, according to Mohammad Mirzabeigi, the head of the Iranian Nursing Organization, 10,000 nurses were fired after the Covid-19 crisis subsided.
