Breathing in Confinement: On Wednesday, October 27, 2021, Mehdi Darini, a political prisoner in Evin Prison, set himself on fire to protest the lack of attention to his case and the ineffectiveness of his efforts.

 

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at noon on Wednesday, October 27, 2021, Mehdi Darini, a political prisoner in Evin Prison, set himself on fire to protest the prison authorities’ refusal to grant him parole. He is a 35 year old production engineer who has been serving his sentence for two years.

 

According to the reports, Mahdi Darini had warned prison officials that he would commit suicide if the interrogator did not comply with his request. During his last meeting, he told his interrogator that if he did not agree to his request, he would go on a hunger strike. The interrogator however, said: “That’s better! The expenses of the Islamic Republic will be reduced!”

 

Mehdi Darini was arrested in June 2019 and sentenced to 11 years in prison on charges of “conspiracy to disrupt national security” as well as “propaganda against the regime.” Based on Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, the most severe punishment, i.e. 5 years of imprisonment is applicable to him.
