Breathing in Confinement: Nine months after the execution of Navid Afkari, two of his brothers Vahid and Habib Afkari, are still being held in Ebrat Ward known as closed ward, in Adelabad Prison in Shiraz. According to their other brother, Saeed Afkari, despite the injuries they sustain as a result of being beaten during their detention, the two prisoners have so far been denied of medical care and are not permitted to be transferred to the public ward.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Saeed Afkari, on his personal page described about his two brothers’ condition. He wrote : “According to forensic medicine, my brother Habib sustains a broken toe, an unhealed fractured wrist and a lacerated shoulder since the time of being held in detention center of the Ministry of Intelligence. My other brother, Vahid also, attempted suicide in protest against being physically and mentally tortured, and as a result, he has been suffering neck and arm injuries.” My brothers have been in solitary confinement for 279 days throughout which they have been denied of medical care.”
In early September 2020, Vahid and Habib Afkari, were transferred to Ebrat Ward (closed ward) which is a detention center in Adelabad prison in Shiraz, for the prisoners who are banned of having even phone contacts. And after nearly nine months, they are still being held in this ward. Despite repeated request by their family and the prosecutor’s promises, they have so far been banned from being transferred to the political prisoners’ ward. Sometimes, the prisoners sentenced to death are transferred to this ward before the execution which has always been objected to by Vahid and Habib and their families.
Saeed Afkari had previously reported on his personal page that he had met his brothers Habib and Vahid Afkari, and that they were still being held “in solitary confinement, and were denied the right to make a phone call as well as the right to have access to medical care.”
Navid Afkari, an Iranian wrestler, was their other brother who was executed at dawn on Saturday, September 12, 2020, in Adelabad Prison in Shiraz, despite serious ambiguities in his case and a worldwide wave of support for him.
