Breathing in Confinement: On Monday, September 19, 2022, for the third day in a row, people in various cities in Iran continued their protests against the killing of Mahsa Amini by the police forces of Tehran’s “moral patrol”. Concurrently, on Monday morning, most cities of Kurdistan went on strike in response to the previous call. In addition, students held protest rallies in the universities of Tehran and Isfahan. During the protests, the security agents and special forces fired tear gases, birdshot pellets, and used batons, and water cannons to suppress the people. The authorities of the Islamic Republic disrupted the Internet in many cities to prevent the spread of news of the protests and to suppress protesters.
According to “Breathing in Confinement”, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on Monday, September 19, 2022, following the killing of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini by the police forces of the so called “moral patrol”, people in various cities of Iran protested and went on strike.
On Monday morning, people, traders and marketers went on strike in various cities of Kurdistan, including Saqqez, Sanandaj, Paveh, Kamiyaran, Divandarreh, and Kermanshah.
According to the human rights organization Hengaw, people went on strike in 24 cities: Ilam, Abdanan, Malekshahi, Kermanshah, Ravansar, Javanrud, Paveh, Kamiyaran, Sanandaj, Dehgolan, Qorveh, Marivan, Saqez, Baneh, Diwandara, Bijar. , Piranshahr, Sardasht, Mahabad, Bukan, Takab, Urmia, Ashnoye and Qator.
Simultaneously, students in the universities of Tehran including Sharif University, Allameh Tabatabaei University, University of Tehran, Tarbiat Modarres University, University of Arts and Amir Kabir University (Polytechnic) as well as Isfahan University protested against the killing of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. The students chanted slogans such as “Women, life, freedom”, “the whole Iran from Kurdistan to Tehran is soaked in blood”, “Kurdistan is the graveyard of Fascists”, “Basiji! Sepahi! You are our killer”, “Basiji get lost”, “Death to the dictator”, “Basiji is a murderer…”.
At Amir Kabir University (Polytechnic), students clashed with Basiji students and security agents who were trying to prevent the gathering. According to the reports, Basiji forces torn the photo of Mahsa Amini that was in hands of protesting students.
Protests began in the cities of Sanandaj, Saqqez, and Divandarreh on the evening of Monday, September 19, and rapidly spread to the cities of Tehran, Gohardasht in Karaj, Isfahan, Mashhad, Rasht, Paveh, Takab, Dehgolan, Kamiyaran, Baneh, and Bukan.
The security agents and the armed special forces fired tear gases and birdshot pellets at the people and used water cannons to disperse the protesters.
According to the reports, people in most cities stood up against the security forces and pushed them back.
At least two protesters named “Mohsen Mohammadi and Foad Ghadimi” died during today’s gathering in Divandarreh following being shot by the police and security agents after being taken to the hospital. 25-year-old Reza Lotfi from Dehgolan and Fereydoun Mahmoudi from Saqqez are other protesters who shot dead by the security forces.
In addition, in the cities of Mahabad, Bukan and Saqqez many protesters were shot by pellets and wounded, seven of them are reportedly in critical condition. It is said that a 10-year-old child is also among the injured protesters.
As per the reports, from Saturday, September 17, to Monday, September 19, dozens of protesters were arrested and taken to unknown locations. Fars news agency also verified the arrest and detention of protesters on Monday, without mentioning their number and identity.
Arrest of protesters:
From Saturday, September 17, until today, dozens of protesters have been arrested by the security agents because of participating in the protests following the death of Mahsa (Zhina) Amini. Fars news agency also announced the arrest of a number of protesters during today’s protests in Tehran.
19 of these protesters were arrested in Saqqez and taken to the quarantine ward of the city’s prison, and 3 other protesters named Kamiyar Heydari, 40, and Mohammad Zabihi, 22, and Ahun Houshmand, were taken to an unknown location. Mr. Ahmadi, a member of Chalchameh mountaineering group and Shahu Iqbal, 30, Goshin Mohammadian and 34-year-old Farhad Sanandaji are among those arrested. Also, five protesters in Paveh named Babak Ghasemi, Arvin Iqbali, Pishwa Rahbari, Ashna Rasouli and Golareh Moradi; A person in Oshnavieh named Abu Bakr Irandoost; And a protester named Kaveh Amini, 32, were arrested in Bukan. Of these, Pishwa Rahbari and Ashna Rasouli were released a few hours later.
According to Hengaw, 4 of the injured in Bukan, including a 10-year-old girl, are hospitalized in the intensive care unit. Also, 5 of the wounded from Saqqez were transferred to Tabriz, and 4 of the wounded from Divandarreh were transferred to Sanandaj medical centers, and the condition of two of them, named Foad Al-Gadi and Zaniar Karimi, as well as one of the wounded from Saqqez, named Sorush, is reported to be seriously poor.
Also, during yesterday’s protests, around 250 people were arrested by security forces in the cities of Paveh, Kamiyaran, Sanandaj, Qorveh, Bijar, Dehgolan, Marivan, Saqqez, Divandarreh, Baneh, Bukan, Mahabad, Oshnavieh and Takab.
Yesterday, Nazanin Hajizadeh was also arrested and later was temporarily released.
Leila Mirghafari, a civil activist who was arrested on Friday, September 16, during the rally in front of Kasra Hospital, was released on Sunday after posting bail. She explained the events of the day of her arrest on a video posted on social media. She said: “On that day, about 22 men and women were arrested by the security forces”
In addition, Fars news agency confirmed the authenticity of medical documents aired by Iran International TV channel. Iran International released Mahsa Amini’s CT scan photos. However, Fars news agency claimed: “Even though these images were initially thought to be fake, the follow-up from the relevant authorities confirmed that the published CT scan images belong to the late Mahsa Amini.” Fars news agency claimed: “Experts believe that CT scans do not show any evidence of head injury or intracerebral bleeding.”
The arrest and then death of Mahsa Amini because of wearing “inappropriate hijab” led to nationwide protests to which some celebrities also joined.
Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old young woman from Saqqez who had traveled to Tehran, was arrested on Tuesday, September 13, at the Haqqani metro station in Tehran by the agents of the “moral patrol” and taken to Vozara Detention Center.
Shortly after her arrest, her half-dead body was transferred to the intensive care unit of Kasra Hospital, while she was in a coma with GCS 3.
