According to “Breathing in Confinement”, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, in a concerning attempt, security organs have filed 2 new cases against Maryam Akbari Monfared, a political prisoner and human rights champion. Filing these cases aim to impose more restriction against her and to extend her prison sentence.

An informed source told the reporter of “Breathing in Confinement” that Maryam Akbari Monfared, who has been in prison for more than 13 years because of her political activities, has recently faced two new cases. The first case is related to the period she was imprisoned in Evin for which  she has beed accused of “propaganda against the regime”. In the second case related to her imprisonment in Semnan prison, Maryam Akbari has been charged with “insulting the Supreme Leader”, “propaganda against the regime”, “gathering and collusion”, “spreading lies and disturbing the public mind” and “Inciting people against internal and external security”.

The hearing against Maryam Akbari Monfared is scheduled on July 19. Filing new cases against Maryam shows the intention of the security institutions to increase pressure on her. According to an informed source, these cases were made in order to take revenge on Maryam Akbari Monfared for complaining to the prosecutor’s office as well as the judiciary for the murder of her siblings.

In the recent interrogation session, which was held on July 1 in the Evin courthouse, Maryam Akbari was confronted with new accusations against her. The evidence against her includes letters, messages, reports, and news published in her support on social media. Intelligence sources have stated that all the evidence have been collected since 2017 when Maryam Akbari Monfared, while in prison, filed a lawsuit for the killing of her siblings.

While only 18 months are left from the 15-year sentence of Maryam Akbari Monfared, filing 2 new cases against her shows that security forces are trying to increase the restrictions and harassing her during the final months of her prison sentence.

In March 2021, after 12 years of imprisonment, Maryam Akbari was deported from Evin prison to Semnan prison.

After being deported to Semnan prison, this political prisoner has been denied the right to call her family members. She is only allowed to call her family in the presence of the prison guard.

It should be mentioned that Maryam Akbari Monfared was detained by the intelligence security forces since January 2010 and was sentenced to 15 years in prison in an unfair trial on charge of “Moharebeh” at branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court headed by Judge Salvati.
