Transfer of 5 Prisoners to Solitary Confinement in Ghezel Hesar Prison for Execution

Breathing in Confinement: On Saturday, January 18, at least four more prisoners were transferred to solitary confinement in Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj for the implementation of their death sentences, bringing the total number of prisoners awaiting execution to five.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, this transfer involved four prisoners who were moved to solitary confinement on Saturday, January 18. Previously, another prisoner, who had been arrested on charges of “murder,” was transferred to solitary confinement on Thursday, January 9, for the same purpose.

Thus, the total number of prisoners transferred to solitary confinement in Ghezel Hesar Prison for execution has reached five.

All these prisoners were arrested and sentenced to death on charges of “murder.” Given the process of transferring prisoners to solitary confinement, concerns about the imminent implementation of these sentences have increased.

Annual Report on Executions in Iran

According to the annual report of the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 848 citizens were executed in 2023. Of these, 7 were executed in public. 57 percent of the executions were for drug related charges.
