Citizen Killed in Khorramabad Following Unregulated Gunfire by Intelligence Ministry Officer

Breathing in Confinement, Saturday, 22 August 2026: Mojtaba Babaei, a resident of Khorramabad, was shot and killed during an attempt by an Intelligence Ministry officer to arrest him.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, a resident of Khorramabad was killed as a result of unregulated gunfire by an Intelligence Ministry officer. The incident occurred on Saturday, 15 August, in the Meydan-e Shaghayegh area, near Karimi Shopping Centre in Khorramabad.
According to information received by Breathing in Confinement, the incident occurred after an individual named Mirali, who is reportedly an officer with the Intelligence Department and a resident of the Masour area of Khorramabad, attempted to arrest Mojtaba Babaei following a complaint filed against him by one of Mirali’s relatives. The officer, accompanied by several other plainclothes Intelligence Department personnel, reportedly went to the location to arrest Babaei.
Reports indicate that during the attempted arrest, Mojtaba Babaei, who according to information received was armed, fired shots into the air, prompting the officers to temporarily move away from the scene. Subsequently, one of Babaei’s relatives attempted to take him away from the area on a motorcycle. However, the Intelligence Ministry officer opened fire, firing seven shots and killing Mojtaba Babaei.
An informed source told a reporter from Breathing in Confinement: “As Mojtaba Babaei was attempting to leave the scene, the Intelligence Ministry officer took a Kalashnikov rifle from one of his colleagues and opened fire on him while Babaei was riding as a passenger on the motorcycle. Four bullets struck Babaei, causing him to fall from the motorcycle.”
The source continued: “After Babaei had fallen to the ground and was wounded, the officer approached him and fired three additional shots at him. Mojtaba Babaei died at the scene.”
According to the same report, when those present protested, Mirali reportedly responded: “Yes, I killed him; I did the right thing.”
Following the incident, Mojtaba Babaei’s family filed a complaint against Mirali. However, they have expressed concerns about whether the case will be investigated independently and fairly.
Babaei’s family fears that the officer’s connections with security institutions and the possibility that he may receive support from security personnel and officials could influence the judicial proceedings and prevent an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mojtaba Babaei’s death.
