Prisoner Dies in Adelabad Prison, Shiraz, Following Delay in Medical Care

Breathing in Confinement, Saturday, 22 August 2026: A prisoner held in Adelabad Prison in Shiraz, who had previously been arrested and imprisoned on non-political charges, died following a cardiac condition and a delay in receiving medical care.
According to reporters from Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, a prisoner died in Adelabad Prison in Shiraz on Thursday, 20 August. The prisoner has been identified by Breathing in Confinement as Hamidreza Rousta.
According to information received, Hamidreza Rousta, a resident of the Kouzehgari neighbourhood of Shiraz, was arrested in 2012 on a charge related to his involvement in an armed altercation that resulted in a “murder” and was subsequently imprisoned in Shiraz Prison.
On Thursday, 20 August, after developing symptoms of a cardiac condition, he died following delays in providing medical attention and addressing his deteriorating physical condition.
According to the report, delays in providing prisoners with appropriate medical care and treatment can have irreversible consequences for their health and lives. Responsibility for ensuring that prisoners have access to necessary medical treatment and healthcare rests with prison authorities and the relevant institutions.
