Death Sentence Against Arghavan Fallahi, Political Prisoner Held in Evin Prison, Upheld by Supreme Court

Breathing in Confinement, Saturday, 22 August 2026: The death sentence against Arghavan Fallahi, a 25-year-old political prisoner held in Evin Prison, has been upheld by the Supreme Court.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence previously issued against political prisoner Arghavan Fallahi by the Tehran Revolutionary Court.

In July, Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Abolghasem Salavati, sentenced Fallahi to death. Under the ruling, she was convicted of “armed rebellion through membership in opposition groups” under Article 287 of the Islamic Penal Code and sentenced to death.

Following her arrest, the political prisoner was held for months in the security wards 209 and 241 of Evin Prison. During her detention, she was subjected to severe physical and psychological pressure. In an effort to extract forced confessions, security authorities interrogated and pressured her over allegations of “attempting to assassinate” two judges, Mohammad Moghiseh and Ali Razini.

Arghavan Fallahi was arrested by security forces in the city of Parand in late January 2025. Following the events of June 2025 at Evin Prison, she was initially transferred to the Greater Tehran Prison (Fashafouyeh), then to Qarchak Prison in Varamin, before eventually being returned to the women’s ward of Evin Prison.

Fallahi had previously been arrested alongside her father, brother and mother during the nationwide protests of November 2022. Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari, subsequently sentenced her to two years’ imprisonment on charges of “assembly and collusion” and “propaganda against the state.” She was released after serving her sentence in full.

With the Supreme Court’s confirmation of her death sentence, the risk of its implementation against Arghavan Fallahi has increased.

The Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran condemns the issuance of death sentences and calls upon international bodies and the United Nations to take immediate action to halt the execution of political prisoners, particularly Arghavan Fallahi.
