Amirmohammad Mojallal Choubari, Detained During This Year’s January Protests, Sentenced to Death

Breathing in Confinement, Thursday, 27 August 2026: Amirmohammad Mojallal Choubari, a 22-year-old political prisoner detained during this year’s nationwide protests in January, has been sentenced to death by the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Amirmohammad Mojallal Choubari had previously faced charges at Branch 33 of the Tehran Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office, known as the Moghaddas Prosecutor’s Office. The charges included “assembly and collusion with the intention of committing a crime against national security,” “disrupting public order and peace by participating in riots,” “attempted intentional murder by attempting to run over officers,” and “resisting law enforcement officers.”

According to available information, Mojallal Choubari was arrested on 2 January during the nationwide protests in Tehran and subsequently transferred to Qezel Hesar Prison in Karaj.

He is currently being held in Hall 35, Unit 3, of the Tarbiat Ward at Qezel Hesar Prison.

No further details have been released regarding the judicial proceedings, the court branch that issued the sentence, or the judicial evidence on which the death sentence was based. Nevertheless, even assuming the allegations against him are accurate, imposing the death penalty in such a case is inconsistent with the principle of proportionality between crime and punishment. A punishment of such severity appears disproportionate to the acts attributed to the defendant.
