Breathing in Confinement – A prisoner held in Ghezel Hesar Prison, Karaj has died due to a delay in transfer to a medical facility and lack of adequate treatment.

According to Breathing in Confinement, on Wednesday, 22 October 2025, a prisoner named Aliyar Havassi died in Ghezel Hesar after delays in being transferred to hospital and the absence of effective medical care.

Verified information indicates that Aliyar Havassi, son of Ali Omid and a resident of Jowleh village in the Sartorhan area, had previously been arrested on drug-related charges and sentenced to prison. He had long suffered from a pulmonary illness and, due to the deterioration of his condition, required urgent transfer to a hospital outside the prison. However, according to informed sources, prison authorities hesitated and failed to transfer him promptly, causing his death.

This death, resulting from the lack of timely and appropriate medical services, constitutes a clear violation of the right to life and the right to adequate medical care. Under the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (Nelson Mandela Rules), the state and prison authorities are responsible for safeguarding the health and lives of those in custody. Failure to provide medical care and delays in transferring ill prisoners can amount to serious breaches of Iran’s human-rights obligations and may warrant legal and international accountability.
