Report on the Execution of Five Prisoners in Prisons Across Iran

Breathing in Confinement, Friday, 23 October 2026: The death sentences of at least five prisoners, including three convicted of drug-related offences and two sentenced to death on charges of “murder,” were carried out in prisons in Shiraz, Semnan, and Ghezel Hesar.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of Prisoners’ Rights in Iran, at least five prisoners have been executed in various prisons across the country in recent days. The prisoners have been identified as Mojtaba Garaei, Ahmad Baranizadeh, Navid Mahdipour, Valid Hassani, and Shahram Babanzadeh.

According to the report, Mojtaba Garaei, 38, a father of two from Semnan, was arrested approximately two years ago on drug-related charges and subsequently sentenced to death. His execution was carried out at dawn on Wednesday, 21 October, in Semnan Prison.

Ahmad Baranizadeh, a resident of Semnan Province, who had previously been sentenced to death on charges of “murder,” was also executed at dawn on the same day in Ghezel Hesar Prison.

Navid Mahdipour, 27, from Shiraz, was arrested approximately three years ago on charges of “murder” allegedly motivated by issues of family honour and subsequently sentenced to death. He was executed on Wednesday, 21 October, in Adelabad Prison in Shiraz.

Valid Hassani, 33, from Masjed Soleyman, was arrested approximately two years ago on drug-related charges and sentenced to death. Shahram Babanzadeh, 30, from Bojnurd, was also arrested approximately three years ago in a separate drug-related case and sentenced to death. Both prisoners were executed in the early hours of Sunday, 18 October, in Shiraz Prison.

Annual Report on Executions in Iran
According to the annual report of the Statistics Centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 2,616 people were executed in Iran during the Iranian year 1404. Of these, 12 were executed in public. The executions also included 67 women and eight juvenile offenders.
