Breathing in Confinement: At dawn on Thursday, January 9, the execution of at least three prisoners, who had been arrested and sentenced to death on charges of “murder,” was carried out in Isfahan Central Prison.

According to Breathing in Confinement,” the news outlet of the League for the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, three prisoners were executed in Isfahan Prison early Thursday morning, January 9, on charges of “murder.” The identities of these prisoners have been confirmed as Samad Najjar Asl, Houshang Shahi, and Behrouz Ghasemi.

As reported by Breathing in Confinement, Samad Najjar Asl, son of Kheyrallah, was married and a resident of Behbahan. He had been arrested five years ago during an altercation on charges of “murder” and was sentenced to death.

Houshang Shahi, a married welder from Lahijan living in Isfahan, was involved in a financial dispute. During a confrontation, he threw a piece of iron at his debtor, which resulted in the debtor’s death.

Behrouz Ghasemi, a resident of Yasuj, had also been previously arrested in Isfahan on murder charges and sentenced to death.

The sentences were carried out at dawn on Thursday, January 9, in Dastgerd Prison, Isfahan.

Annual Report on Executions in Iran

According to the annual report of the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 848 citizens were executed in 2023. Of these, 7 were executed in public. 57 percent of the executions were for drug related charges.
