Akbar Azad goes on leave from Greater Tehran Penitentiary

Breathing in Confinement: On August 26, 2021, Akbar Azad, a writer and activist imprisoned in Greater Tehran Penitentiary, was sent on leave on a bail of 500 million Toman.
According to “Breathing in Confinement”, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Akbar Azad, a writer and activist from East Azerbaijan Province, imprisoned in Greater Tehran Prison, was sent on leave, on 500 million Toman bail. He was arrested on August 9, 2021, after appearing in Branch 2 of the sentence enforcement unit of Baharestan Court, and three days later, on August 12, he was transferred to the quarantine section of Hall 6, Ward (type) 2 of the Greater Tehran Prison.
In 2016, Akbar Azad was sentenced by Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Baharestan to 10 years in prison, as well as 2 years in exile in the Town of Darehshahr in Ilam province, on charge of “participating in the formation of a group to disrupt national security,” which on appeal, was reduced to two years in prison as well as two years in exile.
Akbar Azad, a writer, researcher, translator, member of the Iranian Writers’ Association, and a member of the Pen Club International-France, has previously also been arrested and convicted for his peaceful activities.
