Iran transfers Ahmad Reza Jalali to solitary confinement; risk of imminent execution

Breathing in Confinement, November 24, 2020: Ahmad Reza Jalali, a physician, university researcher and a dual-national prisoner sentenced to death, announced on a phone call on Tuesday, November 24, 2020, that he had been transferred to solitary confinement to serve his death sentence.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Vida Mehrannia, Dr. Jalai’s wife said that on a phone call on Tuesday, her husband told that he had been transferred to solitary confinement for execution.
Mr. Jalali’s family and lawyer confirmed the news and expressed their concern over the possibility of his execution.
On Tuesday, November, 24, Mr. Jalali was initially transferred to the Judgment Enforcement Unit of the Evin Court and then to the Evin’s quarantine ward. Mr. Jalali’s transfer letter states that his transfer is for the execution’s legal proceedings to be completed, and that he will be held in the quarantine ward for up to a week.
Ahmad Reza Jalali, a university professor had traveled to Iran in April 2016 at the invitation of the University of Tehran. He however, was arrested by security forces on charges of “Moharebeh (fight with GOD) through espionage for Israel.” Tehran’s prosecutor has accused Ahmad Reza Jalali of “transferring information about top-secret military projects in the fields of research, military, defense and nuclear in exchange for receiving money and Swedish citizenship for himself and his family.”
Mr. Jalali was eventually sentenced to death for espionage, and the sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court in December 2017.
Previously in an audio message from the prison, Ahmad Reza Jalali had said that all his confessions had been under the torture.
In addition, Mr. Jalali, despite suffering from cancer, has not received proper treatment and medical care.
On Tuesday, November 24, over a phone call to his family, Ahmad Reza Jalali, a dual-national prisoner sentenced to death in Evin Prison, announced that he had been transferred to solitary confinement to serve his death sentence. Mr. Jalali is currently being held in solitary confinement in Ward 209 of Evin Prison. In an interview with HRANA, Mr. Jalali’s lawyer extended her concern about the possible execution of her client and expressed her hope that the efforts of human rights organizations and the Swedish government could have an impact on preventing the execution
