Suspicious death of another prisoner in Greater Tehran Prison; Amir Hossein Hatami’s family and relatives gather in front of the prison

Breathing in Confinement: Following the death of a prisoner due to torture and beatings by officers in the Greater Tehran Prison, his family members and acquaintances gathered in front of the Greater Tehran Prison and demanded the accountability of the authorities. On Thursday, September 23, 2021, the news of the suspicious death of Amir Hossein Hatami in the Greater Tehran Prison was spread.
According to “Breathing in Confinement”, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on Saturday, September 25, 2021, family members and acquaintances of Amir Hossein Hatami and a number of citizens of Ilam gathered in front of the Greater Tehran Prison to protest his suspicious death in the Prison and to demand the accountability of judiciary.
According to the news, Amir Hossein Hatami, 22-year-old son of Aghali, (from Lorni village in Shirvan district in the City of Sirvan in Ilam Province), living in Tehran died under torture of prison officials in Greater Tehran Prison.
Amir Hossein Hatami was arrested after a clash with a citizen and transferred to the Greater Tehran Prison. Mr. Hatami worked in a mall in Tehran.
Amir Hossein’s family stated that they will not receive his body until his death be prosecuted and its cause be officially announced.
Yesterday, the demonstrators in front of the Greater Tehran Prison reiterated their demand chanting: ” Judiciary must be held accountable”. So far however, none of the officials of the Judiciary has reacted to the news. Except the public relations department of the Prisons Organization in Tehran, claimed to have formed a committee to investigate the matter. The organization claimed: “In case of a wrongdoing, the responsible persons, including the doctor, the caregiver and the guard, will be held accountable without any discrimination.”
The death of Amir Hossein Hatami is the second suspicious death in the last three days in Greater Tehran Prison.
On Tuesday, September 21, Shahin Naseri, one of the witnesses to the torture of Navid Afkari, died suspiciously in the Greater Tehran Prison. Two days after the news of his death was spread, the Public Relations Department of the Prisons Organization in Tehran, issued a statement and without providing any details, confirmed the death of Shahin Naseri, claiming: “Cardiac massage, ventilation, IV line fixation and injection of epinephrine was performed for 45 minutes, and despite the efforts of the medical staff, the prisoner died.”
