Breathing in Confinement: The Director General of Health and Counseling Office of the Organization of Student Affairs stated that during the Coronavirus epidemic, one third of the students have lost some of their family members. He added that limited and gradual reopening of the universities is on the agenda of the Ministry of Science.
“A survey questioning 19,000 of students revealed that one-third of students have lost a number of their family members during the coronavirus epidemic,” said Majid Saffarnia in national assembly of Deputies for Student Affairs on Tuesday, September 21.
According to the latest official statistics from the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, the number of students in the country in year 2019 was about 3.4 million. Therefore, Saffaronia’s statement, if true, shows that the death rate of Coronavirus in Iran is far more than official figures.
Statistics from the Ministry of Health show that the death toll from Covid-19 is less than 118,000. This however, is questioned by some of Iranian health officials, who say the actual death toll is at least twice that number.
Mr. Saffarinia added that to reopen the universities, the health protocols of educational facilities must be reviewed by the Ministry of Health and that the terms and conditions for attending classes, dormitories, gyms and restaurants must be clearly specified.
He added: “Vaccination of 70% of the community and review of existing health protocols is a necessity.”
