Breathing in Confinement: Over the past one month, more than 570 protests movements and at least 400 strikes have been held in 30 provinces by various groups of people.

 

With the onset of summer, the fifth wave of Covid-19 pandemic in Iran has put most of the cities into crisis. The incompetence of the authorities and their negligence in taking effective measures to prevent the disease and, more importantly, their failure to provide vaccine, has caused death of many people Iran.

Despite the outbreak of Covid-19 and its dangerous consequences, various groups of people held gatherings, rallies and strikes to protest the economic pressures. In the last decade of June, large-scale strikes of the workers of oil, petrochemical and refinery companies spread to 15 provinces and more than 100 centers. Concurrently, various groups of people, including workers, corporate employees, teachers, farmers and ranchers, also held protest rallies.

According to the Statistics Center of Breathing in Confinement, the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, over the past one month (June 20 to July 20), more than 570 protests were held in 31 provinces and 63 cities of the country by various groups of people which in compare to the previous months of the Iranian year, show a significant increase.

The strikes of the workers of oil projects and refinery companies started on June 19, 2021, simultaneously in 114 cities in 5 provinces, and is still ongoing.

The on-strike workers demand their wages to be increased proportionate to the inflation rate and the poverty line. They as well, considering the harsh working condition at southern corporate projects, demand the enforcement of 20-10 rule (10 days off for 20 days of working per month).

 

One of the most prominent protests in July was the protests of farmers in Mazandaran, Gonabad, Yazd, Fars, Mashhad, Isfahan and Quchan. They poured milk of their livestock on the ground to protest the high price of fodder.

 

 

 

Retirees and pensioners continued their protests in various cities, as they haven’t received any response from the authorities of the Islamic Republic for their economic demands.

 

Furthermore, over the past one month people held protest rallies across the country demanding their most basic rights, such as bread, water, electricity and gas. In addition, people in various cities protested the frequent power outages.

 

In mid-July, widespread protests began in Khuzestan province which quickly spread to other provinces.

The authorities of the Islamic Republic have dealt with these protests in a very violently manner.

 

From the first beginning of the uprisings in Khuzestan, Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, has published detailed reports about the protests on a daily basis.

 

The uprisings in Khuzestan have received the the support of artists, athletes, teachers, actors, etc.

 

Michelle Bachelet, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and Amnesty International, have condemned the widespread crackdown of the protesters in Khuzestan.
