Breathing in Confinement: Following an urgent meeting held on July 4, 2021, Tehran University revoked the decision on banning Kasra Nouri from education.
Earlier, the University of Tehran had announced the expulsion of this dervish prisoner who is begin held in Greater Tehran Penitentiary.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Pouria Nouri, Kasra Nouri’s brother, announced on Monday, July 5, that the decision on expulsion of this prisoner of conscience from the University of Tehran had been revoked.
Mr. Nouri wrote on his Twitter page that the University of Tehran in an urgent meeting on July 4, 2021, revoked the decision on banning his brother from education.
Kasra Nouri, a Gonabadi dervish and one of the webmasters of “Majzooban-e Noor” website, was arrested on February 20, 2018, along with dozens of other dervishes during the police force raid on 7th Golestan. He later, was sentenced by the Revolutionary Court of Tehran to 12 years in prison, 74 lashes, two years of ban from social activities, as well as deportation to the city of “Salas-e Babajani” in Kermanshah province.
Since the time of his arrest, Mr. Nouri has been in prison without a single day leave.
In late June, Pooria Nouri, Kasra Nouri’s brother, on his Twitter page, posted a letter from the University of Tehran’s Vice Chancellor for Educational affairs, announcing that his brother had been fired from university for not registering in the first semester of the 2018 academic year.
A number of students, in a letter to Mahmoud Nili, the Dean of the University of Tehran, criticized the decision, arguing that Mr. Nouri had been in prison since 2018 and that it was impossible for him to register. The students called Kasra Nouri’s expulsion as an “absolutely illegal act” as well as a ” deletion attempt.”
In response to the criticisms, Mohammad Ali Zare, Tehran University’s Vice Chancellor for Socio-Cultural affairs said that the reason for Mr. Nouri’s dismissal was his non-registration at the university, and that if he could present an acceptable piece of evidence to justify this, “his registration would be permitted.”
According to the Student Disciplinary Code: “in the event of a prosecution or conviction of a student, leading to temporary detention or imprisonment, the period of detention or imprisonment shall not be calculated as of the student’s years of education and that the student may continue his / her education after the completing his / her sentence.”
The by-laws also states: “if the sentence period is longer than the permitted period of education, the university shall adapt the way of continuing education to the new educational situation.”
