Breathing in Confinement, Monday, October 26, 2026: Ali Alirezaei, a mathematics student at Sharif University of Technology, has been sentenced to one year in prison following an appeal in his judicial case. He had previously been sentenced by a court of first instance to a total of four years in prison, along with the confiscation of his mobile phone.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of Prisoners’ Rights in Iran, Branch 28 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced Ali Alirezaei on July 14, 2026, to three years in prison on the charge of “assembly and collusion with intent to act against national security” and one year on the charge of “propaganda against the regime.” The initial verdict also ordered the confiscation of his mobile phone. Following the Court of Appeal’s ruling, his prison sentence for the first charge was reduced to one year.

The restrictions imposed on Alirezaei have not been limited to his judicial case. He also faced expulsion following disciplinary proceedings at the university. Furthermore, the Central Council of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology ordered his expulsion from university and imposed a five-year ban on studying at any university across the country on the charge of “inciting unrest and disorder on university premises.”

The judicial and disciplinary rulings against this student have not only deprived him of his liberty but have also placed serious restrictions on his ability to continue his education.
