Breathing in Confinement, Monday, 26 October 2026: Hassan Golshannejad, 36, who was arrested in connection with the January protests, has been sentenced to death. The verdict was communicated to him on Monday, 26 October, while he was being held in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of Prisoners’ Rights in Iran, Branch 5 of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Hossein Yazdankhah, sentenced Hassan Golshannejad to death on charges of “moharebeh” (enmity against God) and “operational activities in support of Israel.”
According to published information, Golshannejad was arrested on 24 February at a café belonging to one of his friends. Following his arrest, security agents took him to his home, where they confiscated a legally licensed hunting firearm and his mobile phones.
Following his arrest, Golshannejad was held in solitary confinement for 10 days at an Intelligence Ministry detention facility before being transferred to Ward 6/1 of Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, where he has remained imprisoned ever since.
Published reports also indicate that he was subjected to pressure and torture during detention, resulting in a fractured rib. These allegations raise serious concerns regarding the protection of his rights during detention and the fairness of the judicial proceedings against him.
