Breathing in Confinement: Tuesday, April 21, 2020, Shayan Saeedpour, who was a child when arrested as a murderer, was executed in Saqqez Prison.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, despite the efforts of civil activists to stop and overturn his death sentence, Shayan Saeedpour was executed in Saqqez Prison on Tuesday morning, April 21. He was under 18 when arrested on charges of murder, and his identity documents to prove this had been presented to the court. While according to international conventions signed by Iran, the execution of criminals before the age of majority is absolutely forbidden!

Following a riot in Saqqez prison on March 27, Shayan along with about 80 other prisoners, had escaped the jail. He was re-arrested later and transferred to Sanandaj Central Prison and then returned to Saqqez Central Prison, where his death sentence was carried out. A few days back after 17 years in jail, Mostafa Salimi also was executed in Saqqez Prison. He as well was among those prisoners who managed to escape from Saqqez Prison.  Implementation of these death sentences seems to be related to the riots in prison.

Child executions are continued in Iran despite international protests.  And according to the Human Rights League’s Statistics Center, at least 4 prisoners who were under 18 at the time of arrest, were executed in 2019.
