Breathing in Confinement: On Monday, July 5, a prisoner sentenced to death for murder, was executed in Mashhad Prison.

 

According to Khorasan newspaper, at dawn on Monday, July 5, 2021, a prisoner was executed in Mashhad prison.

The report has identified the prisoner as Ali-P, 45. Ali’s sentence had been issued by Branch 3 of the Criminal Court of Khorasan Razavi, which was later upheld by Branch 15 of the Supreme Court.

 

According to the report, Ali-P killed his 33-year-old wife with an ax, on August 9, 2009, after returning from divorce court.

 

A few years later, the defendant escaped after being granted a furlough from prison on bail. He however, was arrested again by the police forces, and returned back to the prison. Finally, as the victim’s next of keens refused to pardon him, he was executed on Monday July 5.

 

According to the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the authorities of the Islamic Republic have executed at least 270 prisoners over the past one year. As per the global execution statistics, Iran has the world’s highest number of executions per capita.
