Breathing in Confinement: At dawn on Wednesday, November 27, the death sentences of at least four prisoners convicted of “murder” were carried out in Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Right League in Iran, at least four prisoners accused of “murder” were executed at dawn on Wednesday, November 27, in Ghezel Hesar Prison. The identities of two of the prisoners, Reza Shirzahi and Hamed Pakdel, have been confirmed by Breathing in Confinement. Reza Shirzahi was underage at the time of his alleged crime.

As per the Breathing in Confinement reporter, 19-year-old Reza Shirzahi, a resident of Pakdasht originally from Zabol, was arrested four years ago on charges of “murder” and sentenced to death. He was a child offender, under the legal age at the time of the alleged crime. Iran is the only country that continues to execute child offenders despite being a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Hamed Pakdel was also previously arrested on charges of “murder” and sentenced to death. The death sentences of Reza Shirzahi, Hamed Pakdel, and two other prisoners were carried out at dawn on Wednesday, November 27, in Ghezel Hesar Prison, Karaj. The identities of the other two prisoners are still under investigation.

Annual Report on Executions in Iran

According to the annual report of the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 848 citizens were executed in 2023. Of these, 7 were executed in public. 57 percent of the executions were for drug related charges.
