Breathing in Confinement: At dawn on Wednesday, December 25, the death sentences of at least four prisoners, convicted on charges related to “drug offenses” and “murder,” were carried out in Adelabad Prison, Shiraz.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, four prisoners were executed early Wednesday, December 25, in Shiraz Central Prison for charges involving “drug offenses” and “murder.” Their identities—Mahmoud Keshavarzi, Zabihollah Eslami, Hamed Ranjbar, and Kateb Seydnian—have been confirmed by Breathing in Confinement. Earlier, the execution of Mahmoud Keshavarzi had been reported by Breathing in Confinement.

Based on information from Breathing in Confinement reporters, Zabihollah Eslami was arrested in 2017 following a dispute over a piece of land that led to the murder of his friend. His family was unable to obtain pardon from the victim’s family, and his sentence was carried out at dawn on Wednesday. Kateb Seydnian, an Afghan national, was also executed for “murder.” Mahmoud Keshavarzi and Hamed Ranjbar had been arrested in separate cases related to “drug offenses” and sentenced to death.

All four executions were carried out at dawn on Wednesday, December 25, in Shiraz Central Prison.

Annual Report on Executions in Iran

According to the annual report of the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, at least 848 citizens were executed in 2023. Of these, 7 were executed in public. 57 percent of the executions were for drug related charges.
