Breathing in Confinement: The Supreme Court upheld the retaliation sentence for an inmate who killed a rapist prisoner, to support the young victim.

According to Rokna News Agency, in 2018, in a scuffle in the bathroom of the Penitentiary Complex in Tehran (Greater Tehran Prison), one of the prisoners named Hamid, was seriously injured and died after being transferred to the hospital.

Mahmoud told his interrogator that he had previously noticed that a young prisoner was being raped by Hamid and that the victim did not dare to protest, being scared of him. Mahmoud added, one day, after seeing the young man crying, he got into a fight with Hamid and in self-defense stabbed him, without having intention to kill him.

Despite the defendant’s statements, a death sentence was issued for him in Branch 4 of the Tehran Provincial Criminal Court. The sentence was finally upheld by the Supreme Court, and his case was referred to Sentence Implementation Center
