Breathing in Confinement: At least 93 prisoners were executed in January 2024 in various prisons in Iran. Among them, only the execution of 23 prisoners were announced by the state media.

According to the statistics center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, during the first month of the year 2024, at least 93 prisoners including 7 political prisoners were executed in various prisons.

Out of 93 executed prisoners, 62 were detained and sentenced to death for “drug-related charges”, 18 for “murder”, 5 for “theft”, and 1 prisoner for “rape”. According to the statistics center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, in the past month, each day at least 3 prisoners were executed, or in other words, one prisoner was executed every 8 hours in various prisons.

During the past ten days, the Islamic Republic authorities executed 6 political and ideological prisoners. Mohammad Ghabadloo, one of the detainees of the nationwide uprising of 2022, despite flaws in his case, was hanged in Ghezelhesar Prison on the morning of January 23, 2024.

Farhad Salimi, a political prisoner in Ghezelhesar Prison, was executed the next day after 14 years of unfair imprisonment. This was another example of the crimes of the judiciary of the Islamic Republic. Prior to that, on January 2, another co-defendant of Farhad Salimi, named Davood Abdollahi, was hanged after 14 years of imprisonment.

In the past week, on January 29, 4 Kurdish political prisoners were executed on charges of espionage for Israel according to a death sentence issued for them on the base of their confessions under torture. These executions are taking place while in the coming days, Ms. Nadelinshif, the deputy commissioner of human rights, is scheduled to travel to Iran. This has been widely protested by human rights activists, who see it as an opportunity for the authorities of the Islamic Republic to cover up their crimes in flagrant violation of human rights.

Most of the executions carried out this month have taken place in Karaj. At least 40 prisoners were executed in Ghezelhesar Prison.

The significant increase in the number of executions has raised serious concerns among human rights activists. Western governments must take immediate and decisive action against the authorities of the Islamic Republic and for the abolition of the death penalty in Iran.
