At Least 19 Protests and Demonstrations Held on Monday; Nurses and Oil Industry Workers on Strike

Breathing in Confinement: On Monday, 12 August 2024, at least 19 protests and demonstrations took place across the country, along with the strike of workers from 123 contracting companies in the oil industry continued.

According to the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, “Breathing in Confinement,” telecommunications retirees in the cities of Isfahan, Kermanshah, Tabriz, Ahvaz, Rasht, Sanandaj, Shiraz, Bijar, Ardabil, Sari, and Mashhad protested against the refusal of telecommunications managers and shareholders to comply with the 89/24 bylaw and the failure to meet their other demands. The retirees chanted slogans such as, “We see no justice, only lies,” “Major shareholders! shame on you, enforce the bylaw,” “Iran Telecom does not comply the law,” and “Only through street protests can we claim our rights,” and “Oh, incompetent minister, where is justice?”

Literacy campaign personnel gathered in front of the Ministry of Education in Tehran to protest the non-implementation of Article (Kh) of the law on contract teachers and specified-term contracts.

Pickup truck drivers in Karaj protested against the collection of tolls without the provision of services.

Nurses and healthcare staff at Sadoughi and Rahnemoun hospitals in Yazd went on strike and held a protest rally against the neglect of their demands. The nurses’ strike, in protest of inadequate overtime pay, low wages, hard and demanding work, and excessive shifts, continues across the country. The striking nurses are demanding a revision of the nursing service tariff formula, salary increase directive, and the cancellation of mandatory overtime.

Car buyers from Changan imported vehicles gathered in front of the marketing and sales office of Saipa to protest the months-long delay in car deliveries and the additional charges being demanded.

Workers from the Wagon Pars Company in Arak held a protest rally on the fifteenth day of their strike.

Laid-off workers from the Khuzestan Cement Company protested in front of the company’s gate against their uncertain situation and unaccountable officials.

Contract workers from the Omran Sazan Company in Chabahar went on strike due to five months of unpaid wages.

Contractors in Mashhad held a protest against the failure of municipal managers to fulfill their promises regarding the payment of their dues.

The strike of thousands of contracting workers in the oil, petrochemical, and power plant industries across more than 123 companies continued. The workers are demanding the elimination of contractors from the oil, gas, and petrochemical sectors, the implementation of a 14-day work and 14-day rest schedule, wage increases, and the payment of salaries similar to those of other oil company employees, as well as job-related benefits. The workers’ strike began on 20 June and has continued to this day.
