Complementary report to the Covid-19 crisis in the political women’s ward of Evin prison; Three sick prisoners go on leave

Breathing in Confinement: Following the outbreak of Covid-19 in the political women’s ward of Evin Prison, more prisoners got sick. Concurrently, the political prisoners Alieh Motalebzadeh, Sepideh Kashani and Zahra Jamali, were granted leave because of their deteriorating condition.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, over the last few days, Covid-19 spread in the political women’s ward of Evin Prison, and infected some of the prisoners. The numbers of prisoners with symptoms of the disease are on rise.
Earlier, Breathing in Confinement had published a report on the dangerous situation of female political prisoners in Evin.
On the morning of Sunday, July 18, Sepideh Kashani, because of her deteriorating condition, was taken to a hospital outside the prison. In the afternoon of the same day, she was furloughed and transferred to her home from the hospital to continue her medical care.
On Monday, July 19, the political prisoners Alieh Motalebzadeh and Zahra Jamali were also sent on leave after being tested positive for covid-19.
On Tuesday, July 20, Zeinab Hamrang, who was in Covid-19 quarantine for 9 days, was granted a leave.
Recent reports indicate that a number of other women prisoners have also been diagnosed with the disease. For example, Nahid Taghavi, Arezoo Ghasemi and Rezvaneh Khanbeigi were transferred to the quarantine ward after their test came positive for Covid-19.
Furthermore, on Sunday night, July 18, the political prisoner Raheleh Ahmadi, the mother of Saba Kurdafshari, a civil right activist and opponent of compulsory hijab, was sent on a short leave to attend her mother’s funeral, who died on July 15.
Earlier, in an audio file from inside the prison, Alieh Motalebzadeh described the situation of her fellow inmates as dangerous. She said that in response to the prisoners who protested the situation, the prison deputy director told that: “People are dying outside as well.”
