Breathing in Confinement: After 25 days, Afshin Baymani, a political prisoner in Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj, is still on hunger strike.

Based on the information received by Breathing in Confinement, Afshin Baymani, a political prisoner who is spending his 20th year in Rajai Shahr prison, has been on hunger strike for more than 25days. Since November 10, 2019, Mr. Baymani went on a hunger strike to protest the new case which has been filed against him as well as not being granted a furlough.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Mr. Baymani had recently learned that his furlough was subjected to the payment of fines and compensation for a case, the Deputy Prosecutor using mock plaintiffs has fabricated to re-convict him. A case that even the judges of the Branches 3 and 7 of the Criminal Court refused to accept, as it had been closed 20 years back due to lack of sufficient evidence.

Deputy Prosecutor Amin Vaziri, in a dictum, has subjected his temporary leave to payment of four full Diyahs (one billion two hundred million Tomans). As such, since November 10, 2019, Mr. Baymani, despite having various illnesses including heart disease, has been on hunger strike in protest against this lawlessness.

It should be noted that in the year 2000, Afshin Baymani was sentenced to death on the charge of sheltering his brother, who was a sympathizer of the Mojahedin Khalq Organization. Six years later, however, his sentence was reduced to life imprisonment. He is currently serving his 20th year in Rajai Shahr Prison. Mr. Baymani is married and has two children and an old mother who has been deprived of meeting her son for twenty years, given the long distance.
