Seventh day of hunger strike; Sudden transfer of Behnam Moosivand to Evin Prison

Breathing in Confinement: Behnam Moosivand, a political prisoner imprisoned in Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj, was suddenly transferred to Evin Prison on the seventh day of his hunger strike and was admitted to the Evin’s infirmary. Mr. Moosivand has been on a hunger strike since Tuesday, April 19, 2022, in protest of being beaten by prison officials at the time of his transfer to the hospital.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Behnam Moosivand was transferred from Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj to Evin Prison on the seventh day of his hunger strike. His physical condition has been reported as critical.
As per the reports, Behnam Moosivand was taken out of Political Prisoners’ Ward in Rajai Shahr Prison under the pretext of being transferred to the Evin Courthouse.
On their follow ups on the condition and whereabouts of Mr. Moosivand, his family were informed that he was admitted to the infirmary of Evin Prison.
Behnam was beaten by prison officials on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, for refusing to be handcuffed while being taken to hospital.
On February 1, 2018, Behnam Moosivand was arrested at his home by intelligence agents and transferred to the Ministry of Intelligence Detention Center, Ward 209 of Evin Prison and on March 19, 2018, he was released on bail.
In September 2019, Behnam Moosivand was sentenced by Branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran, headed by Judge Mohammad Moghiseh, to five years in prison on charge of “conspiracy to act against national security” and one year in prison on charge of “propaganda activities against the regime.” The verdict was later upheld by Branch 36 of the Tehran Court of Appeals. According to Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, the most severe punishment, ie 5 years in prison, is applicable to him on the charge of “conspiracy and colluding to act against national security.” Mr. Moosivand was finally arrested on June 15, 2021, after appearing in the Judgment Enforcement Unit of the Evin Court, and was transferred to Evin Prison to serve his sentence. He was transferred to Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj in September 2020.
