“Breathing in Confinement’s” Report about Mahabad Central Prison

Breathing in Confinement – Mahabad Central Prison is one of the prisons that a fairly large number of political-conscience prisoners and death row prisoners are being kept in it.
“Breathing in Confinement” after researching and following interviews with several prisoners have prepared a comprehensive report on the situation of this prison which is being published for public information.
According to the inmates, on average 450 prisoner are being held in Mahabad Central Prison, while this prison has only 330 beds for prisoners and the rest of the prisoners are forced to sleep on the floor.
The number of prisoners who are convicted is about 320 cases of drug-related crimes and 55 people convicted of drinking and smuggling alcohol, about 20 people convicted of financial crimes who along with 21 other political prisoners and prisoners of conscience are being held in Mahabad Central Prison.
More than 200 of drug offenders have been sentenced to death on charge of smuggling “glass.”
According to one of the prisoners in Mahabad Central Prison, a large number of these 200 people are between 30 and 40 years of age, and then the prisoners over 50 years old and 20 to 30 years old make up the majority.
Because of the rehabilitation centers for juvenile prisoners in Orumieh, there are few juvenile prisoners in Mahabad Central Prison whose situation is not known.
Mahabad Central Prison has 5 wards:
Ward 1 is the place of addicted prisoners. This ward has 130 prisoners, while there are only 65 beds in it.
Ward 2, Room 3 of Mahabad Central Prison is the whereabouts of political prisoners and prisoners of conscience also some of these prisoners are held in ward 5, known as the ward of the mentally ill prisoners.
In ward 3 of this prison, the prisoners with the charges of smuggling drugs and alcohol are being kept.
Ward 4 of Mahabad Central Prison which is also known as the whereabouts of the juveniles, is the place where prisoners with the charges of drinking and smuggling alcohol, and collective fighting are being held.
