Expansion of Political Prisoners’ Hunger Strike in the 51st Week of “Tuesdays Against Execution” to 34 Prisons Across the Country

Breathing in Confinement: On Tuesday, January 14, at least 36 demonstrations and protest actions were carried out by citizens and political prisoners.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the Statistics Center of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, the hunger strike by political prisoners, titled “Tuesdays Protest Against the Death Penalty,” expanded to 34 prisons across the country in its 51st week. In their statement, the prisoners highlighted that since last Tuesday, at least 17 people have been executed, and since late December, more than 102 executions have taken place. Prisoners sentenced to death for non-political offenses are being executed daily.

The hunger strike is ongoing in various prisons, including Greater Tehran Prison, Evin Prison (women’s ward, Wards 4, 6, and 8), Ghezel Hesar Prison (Units 3 and 4), Karaj Central Prison, Khoramabad, Naqadeh, Khoy, Mashhad, Saqqez, Ardabil, Qaemshahr, Urmia, Marivan, Kamyaran, Baneh, Salmas, Shiraz, Rasht, Bam, Tabriz, Arak, Kahnooj, Asadabad Prison, Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan, Tabas Prison, Khorin Prison in Varamin, Roodsar, Ahvaz, Ramhormoz, Talesh, the women’s ward of Adelabad Prison in Shiraz, and prisoners in Borazjan and Joveyn.

In addition to the widespread protests in prisons, people in Arak protested against the use of mazut fuel in power plants, chanting slogans such as:
“Burning mazut is a crime; our silence is betrayal!”
“Clean air is Arak’s right!”
“Fossil fuel burning power plants must be shut down!”

Residents of Qeshm Island also held a protest against the privatization of Tiyuteng Beach.
