Release of Kianoosh Abbaszadeh from the Greater Tehran Central Penitentiary

Breathing in Confinement: The Gonabadi dervish, Kianoosh Abbaszadeh, was released on parole from the Greater Tehran Penitentiary on August 8, 2021. Mr. Abbaszadeh had previously been sentenced by the Revolutionary Court in Tehran to 16 years and 6 months in prison, exile, as well as deprivation from some social rights. Last year however, after enacting the new law on reduction of prison sentences, his sentence was reduced to 6 years and 3 months in prison.
According to “Breathing in Confinement”, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on Sunday, August 8, 2021, Kianoosh Abbaszadeh, a Gonabadi dervish, was released from the Greater Tehran Penitentiary.
Mr. Abbaszadeh was released on parole after spending nearly three years and six months in prison.
Kianoosh Abbaszadeh, born in 1990, is one of the dervishes arrested during the repression of Gonabadi dervishes in 7th Golestan street in Tehran on February 20, 2018. While being arrested, he was beaten and severely injured by security forces. He, however, without receiving any medical care, was transferred to the Greater Tehran Penitentiary along with hundreds of other dervishes.
Mr. Abbaszadeh was sentenced by Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, headed by Judge Abolghasem Salavati, to 16 years and 6 months in prison, 2 years of exile in the City of Sib and Soran in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, as well as some deprivations from social rights. However, after enacting the new law on reduction of prison sentences, his sentence was reduced to 6 years and 3 months in prison.
Nazila Nouri, the mother of Mr. Abbaszadeh also was one of the dervishes arrested in the 7th Golestan and was released after spending a year in prison.
