Breathing in Confinement: Shahin Barzegar, a civil activist from East Azerbaijan Province, was sentenced to 91 days in prison as well as a fine of 40 million Rials to be deposited to the state treasury. Shahin had been arrested during a rally in Tabriz in support of the uprisings in Khuzestan. He was later released on bail awaiting the end of trial.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Branch 111 of Criminal Court in Tabriz, presided over by Judge Reza Foroughi notified the civil activist and law student, Shahin Barzegar, of the charge of “inciting and inviting people through social media to commit acts of violence”. Shahin was sentenced to 91 days in prison as well as a fine of 40 million Rials to be paid to the state treasury. Fifty days of his sentence has been suspended for two years.
On July 22, 2021, Shahin Barzegar was arrested by the agents of Ministry of Intelligence, without being presented an arrested warrant. He then, was transferred to the Detention Center of the Ministry of Intelligence in Tabriz.
During the first three days of his detention, Shahin Barzegar went on a hunger strike in protest of his illegal arrest. On the second and third days, he fainted because of severe weakness for which he was transferred to the Prison Infirmary. After spending 21 days in solitary confinement, Shahin was transferred to Tabriz Central Prison and after 3 days he was released on bail awaiting the court’s decision.
