Breathing in Confinement: On Monday, December 27, 2021, a staff member of Golpayegan Municipality set himself on fire in front of the municipal building in protest of the demolition of his newly built house by municipal agents.
According to “Breathing in Confinement”, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on Monday, December 27, 2021, a staff member of Golpayegan Municipality set himself on fire in front of the municipality building.
According to an informed source: “He had repeatedly applied for a building permit without receiving any response from the municipality. So that he decided to build his house without a building permit. However, after the construction of the house was completed, the municipal agents demolished his house, leaving he and his family homeless. And in protest, he set himself on fire in front of the municipality today, and was taken to a hospital. His condition has been reported as critical.”
The informed source added: “One of the municipal workers tried to help him, but he also was burned and was taken to the hospital.”
Suicide and self-immolation rates have risen sharply even in a small town like Gapayegan, largely due to poor economic conditions.
