Breathing in confinement: Based on the most recent information, the statistic centre of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, presents the following monthly report on the violation of human rights in Iran from May 20 to June 20, 2021:
Last month, as usual, widespread and systematic human rights violations continued in Iran. Executions of ordinary prisoners on drug or murder charges, including execution of at least two women, extrajudicial and arbitrary detentions as well as issuing long-term prison sentences for religious minorities (mainly Baha’i citizens), and political, human rights, and labour activists are examples of the horrible violations of human rights in Iran.
During the past one month, at least 12 prisoners were executed by Gallows on drug or murder charges, among them, two women were executed in Yazd and Qazvin prisons. One the female prisoners who was executed in Yazd Prison, on May 23, had been charged with murder. The other woman, was executed in Qazvin Prison, on May 30, on charge of drug trafficking.
Among 12 prisoners executed in the past one month, at least two were drug convicts. The execution of drug defendants is being continued three years after the release of the new law on drug related crimes adopted in 2017.
From March 20 to May 20, 2021, at least 43 prisoners were hanged to death in various prisons by judicial and law enforcement officials in Iran.
In addition, during the last one month, at least 7 death sentences have been issued or upheld in various courts in Iran. One of the prisoners who has been charged with murder in the City of Darreh Shahr, has been sentenced to three times deaths by Branch 1 of Criminal Court in Ilam. Another prisoner also has been sentenced to death in public in Zahedan.
At least 204 people, including civil and social activists, religious minorities (mainly Baha’is), and human rights activists, have been arrested over the last one month. Several citizens, including members of the families of the martyrs of November 2019 protests, were arrested for a few hours because of gathering at one of the martyrs’ home.
In the days leading to the presidential election, a number of people were arrested in various cities on charges of “disrupting the order of election” and “encouraging people not to vote.” The people of Jiroft, Bagh-e-Malek and Yasuj also protested against the results of the City Council elections which turned violent after the security forces open fire at the protesters.
Furthermore, over the past month, the Islamic Republic Judiciary has issued sentences of 186 years in prison for 23 citizens, including Baha’is as well as labour and civil activists.
Tehran Court of Appeals also has upheld three years prison sentence for four Baha’i citizens.
Six Baha’is also were each sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison in the City of Dashtestan.
Branch 18 of the Court of Appeals in Gilan also upheld the 11-year prison sentence for a Workers’ Activist named Peyman Farhang.
In addition to imprisonment, Ismail Gerami, a labor activist, was sentenced to 74 lashes.
On June 21, 2021, the European Union, in its Annual Report on Human Rights and Democracy in the World, addressed the growing violation of human rights in Iran and expressing its concern mentioned examples of violations of human rights in the country in year 2020. Eu also referred to and condemned the large number of executions in Iran, including the execution of children.
In the year 2020 also, the European Union called on Islamic Republic to investigate the disproportionate use of force by the security forces against the protesters in November 2019.
